What the FE Error Means (and similar Samsung codes)
FE signals an overfill/over-level water condition. On some models, similar situations may appear as OC / 0C / 1C (water-level) or LC / LE (leak detected). Common symptoms include continuous filling, immediate draining, or the cycle stopping with the error on screen.
Fast checks (2–5 minutes)
- Power reset: Turn the unit off, wait 1 minute, then on again. This only helps after the root cause is addressed.
- Base pan water: Remove the toe-kick and check for water. If present, unplug power, dry the pan, and inspect hoses/seals before running again.
- Suds check: Too much/incorrect detergent foams and confuses level sensing. Run a short rinse with no detergent to clear suds.
- Drain hose routing: Ensure a high loop (or air gap where required) and no kinks to prevent backflow/over-level readings.
Step-by-step: clear an FE overfill error
Safety: Switch off the breaker and close the water supply before removing panels.
- Test the water inlet valve: Turn the water supply off, power the machine, and start a fill. If water still flows in, the valve is stuck open → replace the inlet valve.
- Clean the inlet screen: With water off, disconnect the supply line and clear debris from the small mesh screen on the valve; reconnect and test.
- Check float / leak sensor: Make sure the float moves freely and any leak sensor in the base is dry and wired correctly. Any water in the base will keep the pump running.
- Verify drain routing: Add or correct the high loop (or air gap). Remove kinks or partial blockages that can cause backflow.
- No-detergent test cycle: Run a short cycle with no detergent to confirm the error is cleared before returning to normal use (HE detergent only).
Prevent it from coming back
- Use HE dishwasher detergent only; avoid over-dosing and super-foaming pods not suited to your model.
- Clean filters and spray arms monthly; wipe door gaskets.
- Keep the drain hose in a high loop / air gap and free of kinks.
- If water ever enters the base pan, stop use, dry it, and fix the source of the leak.
- Warranty note: If your unit is under manufacturer warranty, contact Samsung support before replacing parts yourself.
Samsung FE Error FAQs
What does FE mean on a Samsung dishwasher?
It indicates an overfill/over-level water condition and the machine protects itself by running the drain pump to avoid flooding.
Can a reset clear FE permanently?
A reset may clear the display briefly, but FE returns until the underlying issue (valve/float/leak/drain routing) is fixed.
What most often causes FE?
A stuck or weak water inlet valve, water in the base pan tripping the leak/float sensor, or improper drain hose routing causing backflow.
Is it safe to keep using the dishwasher with FE?
No, address the cause first to avoid leaks and component damage.
