Your washing machine is one of the most used appliances in your home. You count on this appliance to carefully clean your delicates, remove the grime from your workout gear and to provide your family with fresh clothes for everyday wear.
Because you use your machine so often and work it so hard, it is no surprise that it may need some maintenance from time to time to keep it working its best. There is one task you can tackle yourself. Cleaning the washing machine is a relatively easy task that can make a big difference in your laundry process.
A dirty washing machine often has a sour smell and may even transfer that unpleasant scent to your clean clothes. This cleaning process will help you bring back freshness to your washer – and every load you wash!
First, dedicate some time to the process. You will be running two loads with no laundry as well as adding some soaking time. Turn your washing machine into the HOT water cycle and set it to run on a full or large load.
Start the cycle and watch for the water to fill. Once the machine is full, open the lid and add a quart of bleach to the basin. Leave the lid open and allow it to soak for one hour. If you have a nearby window to open for ventilation, it can help reduce the overwhelming scent. After an hour, close the lid and let the cycle run to completion.
Next, you will start over the exact same way. Allow the machine to fill with hot water and open the lid. This time you will add a quart of white vinegar. Allow this mixture to sit for an hour as well and then complete this cycle. After the process is complete, your washer should smell fresher and the basis should feel smooth and clean to the touch.
Once you have experienced a clean washer, you will never want to go back to doing your laundry in a dirty machine. Give your washer the “sniff test” regularly and clean it when necessary. It is well worth the effort when you realize what a big difference it makes!
